26 Best Menswear Brands (Men’s Clothing Guide)

Published on May 22, 2023 by Ryan Hallstrom · Clothing and Style

Wondering which clothing brands are the best for the average guy? Here’s a list of our favorites!

Best Menswear Brands

Let’s face it, shopping for clothes isn’t fun. At least that’s true for most guys. Shopping is much more enjoyable when you can find clothes that you like. The trick is to find the best brands that fit your individual preferences and body type.

Below we’ve compiled a list of 26 of the best menswear brands for men.

Though styles of clothing differ from brand to brand, in this lineup we’ve focused on brands that offer clothes that’ll appeal to guys that want to look good but aren’t necessarily looking to follow the latest trends.

This compilation is also meant as general recommendations for the average-sized guy. That means that if you’re significantly larger or smaller than average (in the US that means around 5’9” and 200 pounds) you might have trouble finding what you’re looking for.

If you’re a shorter man, check out our guide for brands that cater specifically to your body type.

If you’re on the taller side, unless you’re really tall, you’ll probably be able to find clothing from many of these brands that will work for you (though you might still have to take them to the tailor).

26 Best Menswear Brands

Here’s our list, arranged alphabetically:

Ash & Erie

Starting off, we have Ash & Erie a brand that focuses specifically on serving shorter-stature men.

Essential Jean (midtown wash, 29×27) | Notice how the fades are in the right place on my legs? Nice!

Ash & Erie is a great place to get menswear essentials such as sweaters, jeans, and jackets. Be sure to check out our complete review for a discount code!

ASKET

Asket is a sleek Scandanavian brand that emphasizes total transparency when it comes to its impact on the environment. Not only that, they offer quality, no-frills staples.

I recently visited their retail store in Stockholm, Sweden, and was particularly impressed by their easy-to-navigate sizing system. Here’s our complete Asket review.

Banana Republic

Banana Republic is a “grown-up” version of GAP, meaning it stocks items that are generally a little bit more polished. I love BR for their chinos, and it’s also where I got one of my favorite jackets.

Banana Republic Heritage Suede Trucker Jacket

This brand is a great place to start if you’re upgrading your wardrobe after landing your first job after college.

Bonobos

Bonobos sells a wide variety button-up shirts, pants, shorts, and more.

Bonobos Homestretch Jogger
Bonobos Homestretch 27″ Jogger

This Walmart-owned brand is a good choice for a man that’s looking for a one-stop place to shop for smart-casual clothes.

Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers is one of the oldest operating menswear brands in America.

Given their eye for quality and innovation, it makes sense why they’ve outlived generations of their customers. (Reportedly, Abraham Lincoln was wearing a Brooks Brothers coat the night he was assassinated in 1865)!

Though the company has changed hands in recent years, Brooks Brothers is still a bastion of classic American suiting.

Buck Mason

Buck Mason is an online-based workwear-inspired retailer. Their short-length tees are renowned around this part of the men’s style web. (In fact, I’m wearing one right now as I’m typing).

While The Modest Man founder, Brock McGoff, found that some of their other products aren’t as forgiving for the shorter fellow, Buck Mason is a good source for rugged, casual clothes.

Charles Tyrwhitt

We mentioned Charles Tyrwhitt in our article on how to buy dress shirts, partly because of their commitment to doing things properly.

Though Charles Tyrwhitt’s bread and butter are their dress shirts, they also offer pants, suits, sweaters, and shoes.

DUER

While Charles Tyrwhitt’s focus is on dressing up, DUER’s line up is relaxed and laid-back.

Duer Dura Soft Midweight Premium Tee
DUER Dura Soft Tee

DUER’s joggers, jeans, and pants are their best sellers.

Everlane

Everlane is a perennial favorite of The Modest Man contributors. Consequently, we’ve covered their stuff both on the site and on the Youtube channel several times so far.

Everlane Cashmere Crewneck

Their pants and knitwear are especially nice. Don’t forget to check out their shoes and accessories too!

GAP

GAP has come a long way since being called out in Weird Al’s White & Nerdy.

In fact, a few years ago when TMM founder, Brock, tried out jeans from 10 different companies to find “the perfect pair of jeans,” a pair from GAP came out on top.

Shop The GAP for inexpensive wardrobe basics.

Goodfellow

Rivaling Walmart’s is Target’s Goodfellow brand. If you’re a bigger guy, you’re in luck because Goodfellow has sizes up to 5XLT (extra-large tall).

Goodfellow and Co Swim Trunks
Goodfellow & Co. Swim Trunks

If you’re on the shorter, smaller end of the spectrum, you might not find what you’re looking for in your size.

As far as styles offered, Goodfellow is kind of like H&M mixed with GAP.

Goodthreads

Not one to miss an opportunity to one-up the competition, Amazon’s Goodthreads is a step above their Essentials line.

Goodthreads Merino Wool Quarter-Zip Jumper

Amazon plays it safe here with their options. Like Goodfellow, we’ve found that they have interchangeable classics in mostly neutral colors.

Huckberry

Huckberry is a brand for adventurers. Though their waxed jackets, jeans, and boots are perfect for weekend expeditions into the great outdoors, they also are smart enough to wear in most casual offices.

We’ve tried out a bunch of their clothes, accessories, and footwear options.

Hugo Boss

Hugo Boss’ fashion empire is a force to be reckoned with.

Hugo Boss Huge Genius Slim Fit Dot Wool Suit

They’ve been around since the 1920s and have time and time again shown their ability to adapt with the times (sometimes creating scandals in the process).

This upscale brand leans modern. (Be sure to check out their fragrances)!

Indochino

Indochino is one of the best-known names when it comes to made-to-measure suiting.

While perhaps not the best option for everyone, their custom suits and outerwear are nice.

Before ordering, make sure to know your measurements.

J.Crew

J.Crew is an American classic. J.Crew has upscale, off-the-rack clothing for the style-conscious guy.

J Crew Roll finishedJ Crew Roll side

Consider this brand if you’re looking for smart-casual clothing for everyday wear.

J.Crew Factory

Think of J.Crew Factory as a sub-brand of J.Crew rather than an outlet store.

As J.Crew’s younger brother, this brand is somewhat more affordable. Check out our Factory written reviews and try-on video!

Levi’s

Did I say J. Crew was an American classic? That must make Levi’s an American legend.

Levis Mens 531 Athletic Slim Jeans

Levi’s helped forge new frontiers as their jeans were the pants of choice for miners, cowboys, and prospectors in the Wild West.

Today, Levi’s are favored by working men and women across the world and by all who love getting a good pair of jeans at an impossible-to-beat price.

L.L. Bean

Another American heritage brand, L.L. Bean, has rugged boots, moccasins, shirts, and more.

If you’ve ever been in a rural area on the American East Coast, you’ve almost undoubtedly run across this brand before.

Lululemon

Lululemon was a critical contributor to making athleisure go mainstream.

lululemon Fast and Free Shirt

While best known for their women’s leggings, they have a surprisingly fantastic line for men too.

(Lululemon’s ABC pants are pretty much the only kind of pants one of my best friends owns. Seriously, he has like 8 pairs).

Watch our try-on video for several of their options for men.

Nudie Jeans

Whereas Levi’s are incredibly affordable jeans, Nudie’s denim is a bit more expensive.

However, if you can get past the sticker shock, they have a range of incredible jean styles.

In this article, we compare the fit of some of their most popular options.

Oliver Wicks

Oliver Wicks is a custom menswear brand that does things right. Getting a suit in a fabric that’s  hard to find off-the-rack, like flannel, isn’t hard with Oliver Wicks.

Patagonia

Leave the house in a Patagonia vest and you’ll have people wondering if you’re off to go climb a mountain or land a new investment account.

Patagonia Tres 3-in-1 Parka

For some reason, this outdoor brand is ubiquitous among white-collar professionals such as financial analysts and stock brokers.

Stereotypes aside, Patagonia actually does make great vests. (Their 3-in-1 Tres Parka is a real winner too)!

Ralph Lauren

While there are many brands like it, Ralph Lauren is still a great place to shop.

Custom Polo Made to Order

While they might not have sizes for everyone, if you are a small guy, don’t be afraid to try out their kid’s section.

Suitsupply

Considering price, options, and quality, Suitsupply is perhaps the best option for made-to-measure suits for most men.

Suitsupply custom jacket

Their suits, sport jackets, topcoats, pants, and more are fantastic. Really, take a look at our reviews of this awesome brand.

Uniqlo

Uniqlo is a Japanese-owned company that has practically all the essentials a man could need.

They have a huge range of sizes, making this a great choice for dudes big and small.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some common questions about menswear brands:

Which brand is best for menswear?

What brand’s the best? Honestly, this is an impossible question for me to answer until I’ve gotten to know you!

It really depends on your personality, what kind of clothing styles you like, where you live, your budget, and so many other factors. All of the brands I’ve included above are good places to start!

What brands do male celebrities wear?

Male celebrities wear clothing from a vast array of brands. For example, as you might expect Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson probably isn’t shopping in the same place as Johnny Depp.

In fact, many celebrities aren’t really doing much shopping themselves anyway. Instead, they employ professional stylists that take care of their wardrobes for them.

That said, many celebrities including Tom Cruise and Jon Hamm are regularly seen wearing Randolph Sunglasses.

Celebrities also wear clothing and footwear from more pedestrian brands. Justin Bieber, Luke Combs, and Post Malone have all been spotted sporting Crocs.

What are some cool clothing brands for guys?

Some cool clothing brands for guys are Randolph Sunglasses, Thursday Boots, Suitsupply, Huckberry, and Lululemon.

Final Thoughts

These days, there are so many clothing brands to choose from, but those were some of the very best for the average guy.

What brands do you think I should add? Let me know down below!

About Ryan Hallstrom

TMM's Senior Editor, Ryan Hallstrom is from Horseheads, NY, the only town in America named in honor of military packhorses. When he’s not writing about menswear, Ryan enjoys reading, whittling, running, and perfecting his penmanship.

Background: In 2021, Ryan graduated from Brigham Young University where he majored in American Studies and Russian. Before completing his schooling, he had a wide range of job titles including finish carpenter, usher, elevator operator (yes, that’s a real job), landscaper, tour guide, and more.

In January 2022, Ryan began working full-time as The Modest Man’s Senior Editor. In this role, he not only edits all articles prior to publication but also is a frequent contributor to the blog. He enjoys crafting in-depth product reviews (often testing items in extreme environments), helpful self-improvement articles, and detailed clothing guides.

His interest in men’s style stems from the examples of men in his family:

“Growing up, a lot of the men I looked up to dressed well. My dad is always clean-shaven and makes sure that he looks presentable before heading out the door, and my grandfather, who owned and operated a dairy farm, usually wore work pants with a sharp crease and a button-up work shirt.”

However, it wasn’t until the end of high school that Ryan began to care about how he looked. Gradually, over the next few years, he started to dress better and learn about style. “Finding clothes that fit helped me to become more confident. I find that when I try to dress well, I feel better.”

Expertise: Ryan has loved writing since an early age, and in college began contributing to and editing for university publications. After college, he began freelance writing and editing. He’s written from blogs and magazines such as Real Men Real Style, Life in the Finger Lakes, and Gentleman Within.

An avid traveler who spends plenty of time outdoors, Ryan appreciates clothes, footwear and accessories that can take a beating. His reviews often include long-term, thorough testing in extreme weather conditions.

Ryan has also spent more time in a suit and tie than most guys, so he's well qualified to write about classic menswear, business casual and formalwear.
