I am only 5’5″ tall, but weigh in at 206 pounds, so I’m kind of built like a barrel. I’m also 75 years old, so most of my clothes are in the XL range. That being said, I love wearing shorts and, up until the mid 1990’s, I had plenty of 3″ inseam styles to pick from. Then something happened: all of a sudden we were inundated with “jam” pants and “cargo” pants and have been stuck with these awful things for the past 30 years! How is it that women can have the choice of regular fit, plus size fit, skinny and slim fits and us men are stuck with one style … straight up and down? Do know how lousy that looks on most guys? Unless you are about 6’1″ and 190 pounds, you are NOT going to fill out men’s shorts properly.

About 5 years ago, I got fed up with the same old unflattering men’s pants. After all, who wants to go running around with chicken legs when, in reality, it’s the shorts that are cut for stove pipes. So I bit the bullet, so to speak, and wandered over to the WOMENS department one day.

I did a little research, cross referencing men’s sizes with women’s and finally got up the nerve to buy a pair of shorts. Guess what? I have NEVER looked back! All of a sudden, I’m in a pair of shorts that fit me in the waist and butt and are NOT balloony in the legs. The four inch inseam is perfect for my short body, and nobody even knows you are wearing women’s shorts unless you’ve got alot of “bling” all over the pockets.

Call me what you will, but people think I look decent and not like some gangsta with baggy pants almost down to his ankles. As the article has said, keep the length above the knees; anything below that is what really looks stupid.

And if the aim of the fashion industry is to repel men from wearing shorts at all, since the early 90’s, they’ve done a really good job of it.

Obviously, the better-looking you are, the more options you have and the more of the above “rules” you can be creative with. If you’re the tousled-hair preppy type, you get get away with the much-maligned cargo shorts worn with a button-down shirt and Topsiders. Middle-aged Dad types should wear Dad shorts and leave the skinny thigh huggers with the cuffed hems to their sons.

Interesting how shorts with knee socks (as men usually wore them between 1930 and 1970) are a major fashion no-no when soccer players look great in them. And despite the efforts of designers like Thom Browne, the so-called shorts suit still hasn’t attained mainstream approval; you see them on runways and photos a lot more than out in the world. “If you want to wear shorts to work, be a mailman,” your boss is likely to tell you before sending you home to change into something “professional,” even though your female co-workers are wearing skirts up to here. When in doubt, wear long pants.

LOL, ok guys lets take it down a notch ffs. How you dress is up to you. If your comfortable then that’s cool. I wear shorts most of the year round, I tend to wear shorts that are between 5-7 inch drop, its my preference as I don’t like long leg shorts (over the knee) but its just my preference. Also age has an influence I think. Younger fit guys tend to go for the shorter leg as they have great legs and why not show them off. As you get older I think guys tend to dress a little more appropriately, but again each to their own. So please, lets not slag each other off for our opinions, its just a chat room after all.

This is how adult men dress. Above the age of 24, you really shouldn’t still be wearing shorts below the knee unless it’s specifically for playing basketball. But, if you still wanna dress like a 19 year old, low-level w**d plug, be our guest. Just don’t complain when the world doesn’t take you seriously. How you dress has A LOT of influence on how you’re viewed or approached.

They get dirty and are cleaned anytime to date. the sole downside is that the rear pocket of the wallet can be a touch bigger – a wallet fits, just a bit snug.
