Men have been wearing short, fitted shorts for decades, and that’s not changing anytime soon.
A few years ago, I wrote an article called How to Wear Shorts. In this article, I told guys to avoid wearing baggy shorts that go past their knees.
I thought it was pretty good advice. Nothing too controversial, right?
Wrong.
This post became some sort of troll mecca. In short order, the comments section was flooded with “real” (fragile) self-proclaimed alpha males saying things like:
I won’t even show you the worst comments – those have been deleted – but it’s safe to say that my advice struck a nerve.
Anyway…the point if this post isn’t to define what a “real man” is or isn’t. That would be impossible.
Instead, I’m putting to rest, once and for all, the notion that men shouldn’t wear short and/or fitted shorts.
They absolutely can and probably should.

James Bond

I live in London and I regularly wear short running shorts or spandex bike shorts on their own during the summer to do errands. I wore my spandex today, August 2023, while taking care of my needs outdoors. Not a problem at all.
i cut my shorts to 5″ and re-hem them. I have muscular thighs, and I shave my legs. I look damn good in them.
When I was a teen the style was short. So, when long shorts became the style I thought the look was ridiculous. I’m older now and have been a naturist for 30+ years. Now, I’ll wear tights in the winter and shorter shorts when it’s warm. I’m most comfortable being natural and I’m modeling the change I want to see in the world. Go natural and if you can’t do that then wear what ever .

I am over 50, I have always wore shorter shorts. I used to run (back issues prevent me now) and fell in love with the feel and look of shorter shorts. I now tend to buy shorts labeled as women’s, They are mine so evidently they mislabel the pairs I buy I guess. I am conscious of the of under clothing I wear, I wear to prevent mishaps…from experience. I think shorts below mid thigh are not really shorts. There are times and places they are not appropriate, I’ll agree but I shop and walk around town wearing shorts as often as I can. Living in the north I appreciate summer.
Short shorts are the only thing that look good on me. I have wound up buying women’s shorts for several years because men’s shorts are always way too long and so baggy in the rear end. Men’s shorts are designed to make you look bad … period.

Why do I feel like the majority of those guys who got so offended at you calling out their probably solely-cargo short collection at home are *also* the ones who only wear long, baggy shorts because they’re too fat/self-conscious about their bodies to wear normal shorts? Cargo shorts are for Zoey 101 and the OC. It’s 2022 guys, clothes are supposed to be form fitting, not obese-proof.
Interesting article. Although I oppose the idea of short-shorts on men, some do pull it off. But based on the photos provided, short-shorts seemed to be a phase in style during the 1980s and still used for mainly sports or other physically demanding activities. To each their own.
Fantastic article! Short shorts are also part of the rugged traditional dress of some high alpine cultures in Europe (for example, the native dress of Tirol sometimes includes them). So for the haters, I don’t recommend telling a guy who climbs alps everyday, and keeps up his traditional lifestyle in the face of modern society, that his leather short shorts are anything other than rugged and masculine. 😉
