20 Signs You’re a True Watch Guy (Not Just a Flexer)

Updated on July 2, 2025 by TMM Staff · Accessories

Social media has turned watches into the ultimate wrist flex. Flash a gold Rolex in your car, snap a filtered photo, and suddenly you’re a “watch guy.” But anyone who’s actually into horology knows that clout isn’t the currency.

The real ones, though, can easily be spotted from a mile away. They obsess over movement specs, case finishes, and power reserves. So, how do you know you passed the true watch guy test? Here are 20 signs that say you’re the real deal.

1. You Know the Movement Before the Model

A flexer notices the brand first, while you, on the other hand, are already thinking about what’s inside. Is it a Miyota? An ETA? Something in-house? Maybe you’ve even read up on how the movement is finished or how it hacks.

Real collectors don’t stop at aesthetics. They want to know how that ticking heart actually works and whether it can be serviced without sending it to Switzerland.

2. You Can Spot a Screwed Crown from a Mile Away

Water resistance? Not something you guess at. You check for a screw-down crown the second your fingers touch the case. Even if you’re just washing your hands, you want that seal tight.

Flexers may not notice, but you know a screw-down crown means someone cared when they built it.

3. You’ve Argued About Lug Width Like It Was Politics

@Marcus Taylor/Unsplash.com

Whether you’re a 20mm purist or proudly flying the flag for 19mm, you’ve got opinions. Probably a whole drawer of straps to back it up, too.

You don’t just wear watches. You accessorize them like they’re action figures. One for every mood, every season, every vibe.

4. You’ve Said “This Ticks All the Boxes” Out Loud

@Alin Andersen/Unsplash.com

It starts innocently with sapphire crystals. Then hacking seconds. Perhaps you lean more into drilled lugs. Then you catch yourself grinning. You’ve said it. You’ve declared it perfect.

Sure, you might not buy it. But knowing the watch exists is like spotting a unicorn in the wild.

5. You’ve Waited Months (Even Years) for the Right Watch

@Alin Andersen/Unsplash.com

Some people impulse buy, but not you. You wait for the right reference. The right condition. Maybe even the right year.

You’ve bookmarked pages, set alerts, stalked Reddit threads, and messaged sellers at 2 a.m. That kind of commitment is only shared by those who are truly interested in acquiring unique timepieces.

6. You Know the Difference Between a Beater and a Grail

@Darryl Low/Unsplash.com

You treat your collection like a team. Some watches are starters. Others are special teams. One’s your dependable G-Shock. Another’s your “only at weddings” dress piece.

Each one has its role. Each one has its story. And no, you don’t just wear the most expensive one every day. That’s not the point.

7. You’ve Considered Buying a Watch Based on Lume Alone

@Wallace Heng/Unsplash.com

Some guys care about gold. You care about glow. You’ve stood in a dark room, charged your watch under a lamp, and admired that radioactive green like it’s fine art.

Seiko’s Lumibrite. C3. BGW9. You know the difference. You’ve compared it. Probably taken a few photos for your camera roll, too.

8. You Know “Quartz Crisis” Isn’t a Sci-Fi Movie

@Hiroshi Tsubono/Unsplash.com

You’ve read about it. Maybe even have a strong opinion about whether the Swiss handled it well.

You respect quartz and you daily one, but you have a deep sense of appreciation for mechanical watches because of their craftsmanship and beauty alone.

9. You’ve Explained “Complication” to a Non-Watch Friend

@maks_d/Unsplash.com

You’ve walked someone through a power reserve indicator. You’ve explained why a moon phase exists, even though it’s wildly impractical.

You saw their eyes glaze over, but that didn’t stop you. Because to you, complications aren’t gimmicks. They’re engineering poetry.

10. You’ve Dreamed in Genta

@Chris Lutke/Unsplash.com

You know the name. The Royal Oak. The Nautilus. That guy with a sketchpad and a deadline who changed everything.

Even if your budget’s nowhere near those models, you still appreciate the design language. The integrated bracelet. The angular bezel. That unmistakable silhouette.

11. You’d Rather Chat About Microbrands Than Mainstream Hype

@Radoslaw Prekurat/Unsplash.com

You know brands like Baltic, Lorier, Traska, Straton. You follow their launches. You cheer for their risks.

Microbrands aren’t about resale. They’re about love, design, and community involvement. They’re all about watches made for people like you.

12. You’ve Read the Time Before You Checked Your Phone

@Shashank Mohan/Unsplash.com

Sure, your phone’s right there. But when someone asks you the time, your wrist does the talking. A quick bend of the elbow and bam, no one even knew what was happening.

You’re here to be analog all the time, and partly because of the gorgeous dial that gleams when the light hits it.

13. You’ve Bonded With a Stranger Over Their Watch

@Millenary Watches/Unsplash.com

One quick glance at a stranger’s wrist and you’re hooked. Maybe it’s a Speedy. Maybe it’s a vintage Citizen. Doesn’t matter, because you love it anyway.

You nod, maybe even throw out a “nice piece”, and that’s it. A brief, silent brotherhood sealed in stainless steel.

14. You Care About the Story Behind the Watch

That $80 Timex you got in college? To you, it means more than a Daytona you’ve never worn. That Seiko from your dad? Priceless because it’s got history.

The stories matter more than the stats for most watch enthusiasts, and the more words you can use to describe them, the valuable they appear to you.

15. You Know a Watch’s Value Isn’t Just in the Price Tag

An inviting shot of a man entering a Shinola store, hinting at refined style and American craftsmanship.
@Amin Hasani/Unsplash.com

Some of your favorite watches are under $500. Others, you’d sell a kidney for. But a true watch guy knows that cost doesn’t equal connection.

Flexers measure value in dollars. You measure it in moments, design, and build quality. And sometimes nostalgia as well.

16. You’ve Timed Boiling Pasta With a Chronograph

@Rohmer Maxime/Unsplash.com

You had a kitchen timer, but it felt good pressing that pusher and watching the seconds tick. You know deep down inside that you bought a chronograph solely for the appreciation of the mechanical bits.

It wasn’t about convenience. It was about using the tool the way it was built to be used, even if the pasta still came out al dente.

17. You’ve Been Tempted by a Watch Just for the Caseback

@Andreas Bentele/Unsplash.com

You know nobody sees it but you. But that’s the point. It’s yours, and it’s a hidden beauty that only true watchmakers appreciate.

18. You’ve Cursed a Misaligned Chapter Ring

@DANIEL HAY/Unsplash.com

You see the tiny details most people don’t. The chapter ring’s off by just a millimeter, but it might as well be a mile.

The smooth, silky glide of a spring drive Grand Seiko. Most people won’t notice, but you do, and now you can’t unsee it. You’ve considered returning a watch over it. Maybe you even have.

19. You Follow Watch YouTubers Like They’re Rockstars

@Getty Images/Unsplash.com

Teddy Baldassarre. Nico Leonard. Jory Goodman. The Watchfinder voice guy. You’ve heard them all and binge-watched countless videos like a Netflix series.

You weren’t even planning to buy anything. But now you’ve got three tabs open and a new addition to your wish list.

20. You Keep Saying “This Is the Last One” (But It Never Is)

@LumenSoft Technologies/Unsplash.com

Every collector’s famous last words. You’ve built the perfect collection. It’s done, for now at least.

Until the next piece calls your name. A new release or perhaps a vintage find. A weird one-off you didn’t know existed until yesterday, and now you’re browsing listings again.

Because collecting watches is the fun part, and only half of it is due to wearing those immaculate timepieces that only true watch guys appreciate.
