11 Types of Men’s Wallets & How to Choose One

Updated on February 18, 2025 by Brian Adee · Wallets

In this post, we’ll explain the 11 most popular types of men’s wallets and show examples. Read on to learn more!

Types of Popular Mens Wallets

Wallets are more than just a place to store your cash and cards. At best, they become an essential part of your everyday carry that helps to define how you want to relate to the world.

So if you’re searching for the right wallet to match your style, take a look through the 11 types of wallets we’ve collected here. They span the whole range of wallet styles, from classic to futuristic and everything in between.

Popular Types of Men’s Wallets

Here they are in no particular order…

Bifold

When you think of a wallet, you probably have an image of the classic bifold in mind. It’s been one of the most popular styles of wallets for decades, thanks to its simple design that’s easy to manufacture.

As the name implies, the bifold is a wallet that folds, and it has two sections. From there, this type of wallet can have any number of added features: Card slots, an ID window, and a place to hold bills are all common.

Trifold

A natural progression from the bifold, a trifold wallet adds an extra fold to offer three distinct panels.

Just like bifolds, they come in a wide range of sizes and materials and can be outfitted with many added features.

They’re usually bulkier and thicker than other wallets, but offer more storage than any other style.

Slim

Most guys don’t need nearly as much wallet as they carry around. When you’re ready to go more minimalist, a slim wallet is the best choice.

They often keep the same basic design as a bifold wallet, but cut down on size and bulk. There’s still room for a half dozen cards, your ID, and a few bills — without leaving too much empty space to fill with other junk like receipts and business cards.

Card Wallet

Even slimmer than the slim wallets featured above, card wallets forego any folds and focus on one thing only: Making the most minimalist wallet possible.

You’ll store everything in a single layer, with just enough room for a few cards, your ID, and a couple of bills. They’re conveniently sized to fit in your front pocket, back pocket, or bag — but be careful, because their small size makes them easier to misplace.

Passport Wallet

Also known as a travel wallet, the passport wallet keeps your most valuable traveling possession — your passport — safe and secure.

Because they’re sized to hold an entire passport inside their folds, these wallets are some of the largest you’ll find. But for the peace of mind they provide while traveling, it’s worth making a little extra space to hold one of these in your travel bag.

Money Clip

Money clips come in two styles: As a standalone for carrying your cash, or as an add-on for other types of wallets. Either way, the purpose is the same — to securely hold all your bills in one place.

Older style money clips will do this just via mechanical pressure, while more modern clips use magnets to hold everything in place.

Coin Pocket Wallet

If you’re tired of change jangling around in your pockets or bags, a coin pocket wallet might be the way to go.

They’re a modified version of the classic bifold with — you guessed it — a pocket for coins. Because of the extra pocket, they tend to be much bulkier than standard bifolds. Definitely made for the maximalist, not the minimalist.

Cell Phone Case Wallet

Looking to maximize your efficiency in your everyday carry? A cell phone case wallet might be right for you. As the name implies, it’s a wallet that’s integrated with the case for your cell phone.

This has the double benefit of saving a little bit of space in the design of both pieces of gear, as well as keeping all your valuables in one place.

RFID Blocking Wallet

Radio frequency identification, or RFID, is a feature of some cards and types of identification. It’s most commonly used for government- or corporate-issued passcards that can be scanned to get you into secure buildings.

If you need maximum security in your wallet, equipping it with RFID blocking is the next step to take. It’ll prevent anyone from picking up your cards’ details while you’re out and about.

ID Card Wallet

Tired of opening your wallet to show your ID? An ID card wallet places your driver’s license or badge on the outside of the wallet, making it easy to display your details at a moment’s notice.

The best ones are slim and sleek rather than bulky.

Belt Wallet

When is the absolute worst time to get your wallet stolen? When you’re traveling. So if you want absolute protection for your cards and cash while you’re on the road, a travel belt wallet is the logical choice.

Why no love for breast pocket wallets?
I’ve carried one for almost 40 years and refuse to carry anything else since I had my pocket picked as a youngster after college at a work seminar.
My everyday carry is a Stuart Kern that’s a little larger than I’d like. What sold be on buying it 15 or so years ago was that it had easy access to the credit card/id slots and the slip pockets large enough to stash large denomination dollar bills without falling out when I travel for work.
I also have a Laurner 9 credit card/id breast pocket wallet that I carry when my wife and I attend special/ black tie events.
The Kern is in need of replacement and can’t find one close to its functionality.
Most of the breast pocket wallets today have zippered pockets that are a big turnoff for me.
Have you heard of the Wanders Travel Company?
They make a breast pocket wallet that has 30 card slots and is reasonably priced. The problem I have with it is that 30 credit card slots is way too many for me.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Hugh
