The majority of men choose to go the bald route as a result of receding hairlines or significant hair loss. However, some men simply choose the look out of personal preference.

Shaving your head can be a big change, not only visually but also in regards to your grooming routine. Going bald means your scalp is going to be exposed to elements (like UV rays) that hair normally offers some protection against.

You are also going to expose any scalp issues you might have, like dry skin, oily skin, and dandruff.

That said, being bald is a great look for men. You can make sure you look and feel your best by implementing a scalp care routine.

Should Bald Men Use Shampoo?

Bald head skin care is relatively low maintenance, but don’t mistake that for no maintenance.

Even without hair, scalps still accumulate oil and dead skin cells like the rest of the body. This means that cleansing or shampooing your head is still essential.

You don’t necessarily need a product labeled as a shampoo. For bald heads, there’s a greater range of appropriate products to use. You’ll can choose between products labeled cleansers, shampoos, and head washes.

(Tip: Some men might find that bar cleansers are easier to apply than liquids!)

Don’t worry too much about the name as long as you choose one of these products to cleanse your head with. Focusing on the ingredients that match your concerns matters more.

How To Take Care of a Bald Head

Care for bald heads is going to be more similar to a facial skincare routine than a typical hair routine for men. If you don’t yet have a facial skincare routine, it’s a good idea to take on both.

Your bald head is an extension of your face in a way, and you can usually get away with using overlapping products for both.

Steps for caring for a bald head:

  • Cleanse
  • Exfoliate
  • Moisturize
  • SPF
  • Shaving

One study noted that bald skin sweated over twice as much as hairy skin. Producing more sweat means there’s a higher chance of concerns like dandruff, oily skin, dry skin, and clogged pores. It’s tempting to think you can just rinse your head under shower water, but that could lead to problems!

The actual process of washing your bald head will be similar to how you would wash your hair. Wet your head to allow the pores a chance to open up.

Then, gently massage your choice of cleanser onto your scalp. This step will promote circulation and help to clear clogged pores. Make sure not to apply too much pressure on your fingernails, as this could cause irritation.

If you struggle with an oily scalp, look for a cleanser with salicylic acid. If you have a dry scalp, try an anti-dandruff shampoo. If you don’t have either of these skin concerns, opt for a gentle cleanser that is similar to what you might use on your face.

It’s a good idea to follow up with a scalp scrub or treatment after cleansing. Exfoliating can help prevent ingrown hairs. Then, you’ll still want to moisturize your head no matter what, whether you are shaving that day or not.

Choose a moisturizer based on your personal preferences that might be similar to what you’d use on your face.

You can choose something ultra-hydrating or a matte moisturizer if you don’t prefer a shiny look. If your daily moisturizer does not include SPF, be sure to follow up with a separate product. Using SPF daily is very important since your scalp is exposed and more susceptible to UV ray exposure.

Bald Head Care Products

Here are a few products that are beneficial for bald head care or bald head concerns:

Dermatologists recommend using a minimum SPF of 30. For daily use, this is a great option. If you’re having a beach day or planning to be outside for extended periods of time, you can opt for a higher SPF.

FAQ

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions regarding bald head care for men:

How Do You Maintain a Bald Head?

You can maintain a bald head by shaving whichever way you prefer. Then, following up with a bald head care routine similar to a facial skin routine will give the best results.

What Is the Best Treatment for Bald Head?

Anti-dandruff products and vitamin E oil are the best treatments for bald heads. Vitamin E oil protects against UV rays, which is important when you’re missing the protection that hair can provide.

Should You Moisturize Bald Head?

Absolutely! It’s also essential to moisturize before shaving.

Conclusion: Scalp Care Is Important

Scalp care for bald heads is super important and will ensure that you feel refreshed and confident. Try gentle products, and be sure to do a patch test if you have sensitive skin or any ingredient concerns.

Once you find your cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer with SPF, you’ll get the hang of it. Bald men don’t necessarily have a more complicated care routine, but the focus is on skin rather than hair.
